Rausu, Coastal town in eastern Shiretoko Peninsula, Japan
Rausu extends along a narrow strip of land for 64 kilometers, bordered by the Nemuro Strait and mountains of the Shiretoko Peninsula.
The town originated from Uebetsu Village in 1901, gained status as a second-class municipality in 1923, and received its current designation in 1961.
Local fishermen maintain traditions through seasonal catches of kichiji rockfish, Alaska Pollock, konbu kelp, salmon, squid, and sea urchins.
Transportation connections include National Highway 335 and regional bus services, with direct routes to Kushiro taking approximately three and a half hours.
The name derives from the Ainu word Raushi, which refers to a place of people with strong spirit, reflecting the connection to indigenous heritage.
