Sayo, Rural town in southwestern Hyogo Prefecture, Japan
Located in a river basin system, Sayo encompasses 307 square kilometers of territory with mountains and dense forests covering 80 percent of its area.
The town contains ruins of Rikan Castle, constructed by the Akamatsu clan during the Nanboku-cho period, which later served as a base for the Ikeda clan.
Hirafuku-juku developed as a significant post town along the Inaba Kaido highway, connecting the major cities of Kyoto and Osaka to Inaba Province.
The town maintains transportation links through JR West Kishin Line and Chizu Express railways, as well as access to the Chugoku and Tottori Expressways.
Sayo houses SPring-8, the largest synchrotron radiation facility globally, contributing to advanced scientific research and medical treatments.
