Kitayama, Rural village in Higashimuro district, Japan.
Kitayama spans 48 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, with forests covering 97 percent of the land and a river flowing through the region.
The village establishment occurred on April 1, 1889, during the Meiji period when Japan reorganized its municipalities to modernize local governance systems.
Residents maintain traditional forestry practices, particularly regarding timber harvesting and transportation methods that have shaped local customs over generations.
The village connects to larger urban areas through Japan National Route 169, with regular bus services operating between Kitayama and neighboring municipalities.
This exclave settlement, surrounded by Mie and Nara prefectures, remains the only village in Wakayama Prefecture and cultivates jabara citrus for medicinal purposes.
