Shan State

The largest state of Myanmar extends over 155,800 square kilometers of mountainous terrain between China, Laos, and Thailand.

The territory emerged from multiple princely states during the Pagan Kingdom period and remained semi-autonomous under British colonial rule until 1948.

The Shan people, Myanmar's largest minority group, practice Theravada Buddhism and maintain their distinct written language across the region.

Agriculture centers on rice cultivation in irrigated valleys, while the surrounding hills support different farming methods adapted to mountain conditions.

The state contains numerous ethnic armies operating independently, with many areas east of the Salween River functioning outside central government administration.
