St. Michael's Church, Gothic Catholic church in central Cluj-Napoca, Romania

St. Michael's Church is a Gothic building in central Cluj-Napoca with three equal-height aisles divided by columns and a polygonal apse at the east end. The tower rises approximately 80 meters and creates a slender landmark visible across the city.

Construction started in the mid-14th century following Cluj's rise to city status in 1316 and its growing importance. Major fires in 1498, 1665, and 1697 caused damage and required significant repairs that modified the structure.

The interior holds 14th-century carved capitals showing masks and narrative scenes that reveal medieval craftsmanship and artistic expression. These decorations reflect the prosperity and cultural interests of people who lived here centuries ago.

The church tower can be climbed by arranging a visit at the Information Point in Piața Unirii square. The internal staircase is narrow and steep, so wearing comfortable shoes is advisable for the climb.

The sacristy portal from 1528 displays Late Renaissance influences from Vienna and includes the coat of arms of Cluj alongside pelican imagery. This combination reveals how distant artistic traditions reached this corner of Central Europe.
