B'Nai Israel Synagogue
B'Nai Israel Synagogue, Historic synagogue in Cape Girardeau, United States
The B'Nai Israel Synagogue features Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with a red painted sheet metal dome and stuccoed brick exterior at 126 South Main Street.
The synagogue was constructed in 1937 after a fire destroyed the Jewish community's Torah scroll, leading to the establishment of their first permanent worship place.
The building incorporates Islamic architectural elements, including pointed horseshoe arches, diamond pane casement windows, and decorative mosaic tiles throughout the structure.
The structure, now functioning as an Evangelical church, stands within the Courthouse-Seminary Neighborhood Historic District and received National Register recognition in 2004.
The synagogue remains the single structure in Cape Girardeau displaying Islamic architectural characteristics, marking it as an exceptional example of religious architecture.
