Blockhouse No. 1, Military fort in Central Park, Manhattan, United States.
Blockhouse No. 1 is a stone fortification built in 1814 that sits on an elevated rock outcrop in the North Woods section of Central Park. The structure was made from red sandstone and Manhattan schist, featuring thick walls with gun ports and a platform that once held artillery pieces.
The fort was built in 1814 by volunteers under General Joseph Gardner Swift as part of New York's defense system during the War of 1812. It was one of several fortifications designed to protect the city against potential British attacks from the north.
The structure shows how the city wanted to protect its northern boundary in the early 1800s and reflects the concerns of that era. Visitors can see today how this stone fortification was built into the natural rock formations of the park.
The location is near West 109th Street and accessible on foot, though the terrain is uneven with exposed rock. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as stone surfaces and steps can become slippery when wet.
Though the fort housed up to 2,000 state militia, it never saw combat because the British never attempted an invasion of Manhattan. Today it remains the only surviving fortification from that early defense network in the park.
