Smøla Municipality

Smøla Municipality encompasses one main island and over 3,000 smaller islands across the Nordmøre region, with Hopen serving as its administrative center point.

The municipality formed on January 1, 1960, through the consolidation of three separate administrative entities: Edøy, Brattvær, and Hopen municipalities.

The municipal coat of arms, granted in 1989, displays two flying seagulls against a red background, representing the strong connection between the community and maritime life.

The local government manages essential services through a 17-member municipal council, overseeing education, healthcare, welfare programs, and infrastructure development across the territory.

The municipality contains a substantial wind farm system of 68 turbines, established in phases since 2002, contributing significantly to Norway's renewable energy production.
