The municipality emerged in 1947 following border changes after World War II, when the original town of Gorizia remained in Italy.

The area maintains strong connections with Italian Gorizia through shared festivals, educational programs, and community events across national borders.

The municipality encompasses several settlements including Solkan, Kromberk, and Rožna Dolina, serving as an administrative center for the region.

In 2025, Nova Gorica will join with Italian Gorizia to become the first cross-border European Capital of Culture spanning two countries.
