Golden Roof, Late Gothic building in Old Town, Austria
The Golden Roof features an elaborate oriel adorned with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles that shimmer against the white stone facade of the building.
Emperor Maximilian I commissioned the structure in 1493 to commemorate his marriage to Bianca Maria Sforza, using it as a royal viewing platform for tournaments.
The second-floor balustrade displays eight detailed stone reliefs depicting Emperor Maximilian's life events, including portraits with his two wives and dancers.
The museum inside the building opens from May through September daily, and from October through April Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Hidden messages in ancient text run behind the figurative reliefs, containing Latin phrases about light and guidance according to historian Erhard Maroschek.
