Aiguamolls de l'Empordà

The protected wetland area spans 4,784 hectares between the Muga and Fluvià rivers, featuring lagoons, pools, marshes, and drainage channels.

The marsh experienced extensive drainage in the 19th century through canal construction, leading to agricultural expansion until its protection status in 1983.

The reserve represents the second largest wetland system in Catalonia, providing essential environmental education programs for regional students and researchers.

The visitor center at Cortalet farm contains seven observation points connected by wheelchair-accessible dirt tracks for nature observation.

The wetland supports 327 bird species, including one of only two Spanish colonies of lesser grey shrike.
