Monastery of Santa María

The monastery complex centers around a cloister and features a Gothic church with a central nave, chapter house, refectory, and kitchen areas.

The monastery began in 1170 when Count López de Haro and his wife donated Cañas and Canillas villages to Cistercian nuns from Hayuela monastery.

The chapter house contains the sepulcher of Beata Urraca López de Haro, an influential abbess who guided the monastery until her death in 1262.

The monastery opens Tuesday through Sunday with guided tours available at 3.50€ for adults and 1€ for children, including access to the museum section.

The monastery's relic room displays artifacts including claimed horseshoes from Santiago's horse from the battle of Navas de Tolosa.
