Roman theatre of Tarraco

The Roman theatre of Tarraco incorporates seating sections into the natural slope of the hill, featuring three main components: cavea, orchestra, and scaena sections.

The theatre, constructed during the reign of Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC, served as a primary entertainment venue in the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis.

The theatre design reflected social hierarchy through seating arrangements, with decorative elements including capitals, friezes, columns, and sculptures throughout the structure.

While the theatre remains partially deteriorated, visitors can observe the archaeological site from designated viewpoints along nearby streets in the old quarter of Tarragona.

After a fire in the 3rd century, many materials from the theatre were removed and repurposed for new constructions in the surrounding area.
