Senones Abbey

The abbey complex features a grand court, cloister, garden, ceremonial stairway, palace, and an extensive library within its classical architectural design.

Founded in 640 by Saint Gondelbert, bishop of Sens, the monastery transformed into a major Benedictine institution that influenced regional politics until 1793.

Dom Antoine Calmet assembled a collection of 15,000 volumes during his tenure as abbot in 1729, establishing the abbey as a center of learning.

The abbey opens throughout the year for individual visits and group tours, which require advance reservations through the local tourism office.

The bell tower remains as the only 12th-century structure among the current buildings, which were reconstructed during the 18th century.
