Castle of Cognac, Medieval castle in Cognac, France

The castle extends along the Charente River with thick stone walls, multiple towers, and a grand facade added in the 16th century.

Built in 950 by Hélie de Villebois, the fortress changed ownership multiple times during the Hundred Years' War between France and England.

The castle marks the birthplace of King Francis I of France in 1494, reflecting the deep connection between French royalty and this region.

Tours of the castle include exploration of dry and wet cellars, with options ranging from 75 minutes to 2 hours including cognac tastings.

In 1795, merchants Otard and Dupuy saved the castle from demolition by converting it into cellars for aging cognac, a purpose it still serves.
