Vienna Technical Museum, Science and technology museum in Penzing district, Vienna, Austria.
Technisches Museum is a science and technology museum in Penzing district of Vienna covering 22000 square meters (237000 square feet) across multiple floors. The exhibitions display machinery, vehicles, musical instruments, and industrial equipment from different periods of technological history.
Emperor Franz Josef laid the foundation stone in 1909 during a ceremony on the site in the fourteenth district. The building opened to the public only in 1918 after the First World War.
The collections focus on mining with a reconstructed tunnel, automotive industry with original vehicles, and communication technology from telegraph to mobile phone. These exhibition areas show how working life and daily routines changed through technical inventions in Austria.
The techLAB maker space offers guided activities and experiments where visitors try out technical concepts themselves. The exhibitions spread across multiple floors with accessible routes to most areas of the building.
An extensive collection of synthesizers documents the evolution of electronic sound generation from the earliest devices to modern systems. The medical technology department displays the Otto Bock lower limb prosthesis genium, one of the most advanced leg prostheses of its time.
