, Nuclear power station in Pevek, Russia
The Akademik Lomonosov is a floating nuclear power plant measuring 144 meters long with two KLT-40S reactors aboard. The vessel sits in Pevek and supplies electricity and fresh water to the surrounding Chukotka region.
Construction began in 2007 at the Sevmash Submarine-Building Plant in Severodvinsk before moving to the Baltic Shipyard in Saint Petersburg. The project responded to the shutdown of aging power plants in Chukotka and enabled electricity supply to this remote area.
The vessel carries the name of Mikhail Lomonosov, an 18th-century Russian scholar whose legacy connects to scientific advancement and discovery. This naming reflects how the station symbolizes Russia's commitment to bringing energy to remote regions.
The vessel remains moored permanently in Pevek harbor and can be viewed from the outside, though internal tours are not available to the public. Summer months offer the best conditions for visiting and photographing due to calmer seas and better daylight.
The plant produces roughly 240,000 cubic meters of fresh water daily through an onboard desalination system. This dual purpose makes it a critical resource for water and power in this isolated northern port.
