Norwich Castle, Medieval castle and museum in Norwich, England
The stone keep of Norwich Castle, constructed with Caen stone, stands on a raised mound overlooking the city from its central location.
William the Conqueror ordered the construction of Norwich Castle in 1066 to establish Norman control over the region following his conquest of England.
The museum exhibits display regional artifacts, including archaeological finds, natural history specimens, and an extensive collection of decorative arts from Norfolk.
The castle museum opens Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sundays from 13:00 to 17:00, with winter hours closing 30 minutes earlier.
The castle functioned as Norfolk's county prison from 1220 to 1887, with cells and gallows that remain visible in the building structure.
