Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge
Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, Steel transporter bridge in Middlesbrough, England
The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge connects Port Clarence and Middlehaven across the River Tees using a suspended gondola system at 57 meters height.
Constructed between 1910 and 1911 by Sir William Arrol & Co, the bridge survived both World Wars including a Zeppelin bombing raid in April 1916.
The structure appears on Royal Mail First Class stamps and represents industrial engineering excellence with its Institution of Mechanical Engineers Heritage Plaque recognition.
The bridge requires significant repairs estimated at 67 million pounds and remains closed since 2019 due to structural safety concerns identified in technical assessments.
This Grade II listed structure holds the record as the longest existing transporter bridge globally, featuring a main span of 1,200 feet across the River Tees.
