Neptune and Triton, Marble sculpture in Victoria and Albert Museum, England

The white marble sculpture depicts Neptune standing over his son Triton, who blows a conch shell while positioned beneath his father's legs.

Cardinal Alessandro Peretti commissioned this sculpture from Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1622 for the garden fountain at Villa Montalto in Rome.

The sculpture represents a scene from Roman mythology where Neptune commands Triton to signal the end of a great flood with his conch shell.

The sculpture stands 182 centimeters tall and required specialized equipment and conservation techniques for its installation in Gallery 7 of the museum.

X-ray analysis revealed internal lead tubes within Triton's figure, indicating the sculpture's original function as part of a water fountain system.
