Herstmonceux Castle, Medieval castle in East Sussex, England
The red brick fortress stands with moats and gardens across fifteen acres of land near the village of Herstmonceux in East Sussex.
Construction of this Grade I listed building started in 1441 under Sir Roger Fiennes, marking an early example of brick architecture in England.
The castle hosts an annual Medieval Festival each August, featuring historical reenactments, period demonstrations, and traditional performances across its grounds.
Visitors can access the castle and gardens from February through November, with guided tours available at scheduled times throughout the operating season.
From 1957 to 1988, the castle served as the location of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, housing several important astronomical instruments and telescopes.
