Baile Hill, Motte-and-bailey castle in Bishophill, York, England.
The castle features a 40-foot-high earthen mound with a 180-foot diameter base, encircled by defensive ditches along the River Ouse.
William the Conqueror ordered the construction of this defensive structure in 1068 as part of his northern campaign to establish control over York.
The castle grounds served as a communal space for medieval archery practice and Shrovetide celebrations among York residents.
The site connects to York's city walls at the intersection of Baile Hill Terrace and Cromwell Road, offering views across the river.
During the English Civil War of 1644, the castle mound functioned as an artillery position for two large guns defending the city.
