Corbridge Lion, Roman stone sculpture in Corbridge, England

The sandstone sculpture depicts a male lion standing on an unidentified prey, measuring 0.95 meters long and 0.87 meters high.

Archaeological excavations in 1907 revealed the lion within a water tank at Site II of the Roman settlement, dating from the 2nd or 3rd century.

The sculpture reflects Roman practices of using lion imagery in funerary monuments, suggesting its original purpose as a tomb decoration.

The lion currently resides in the Corbridge Roman Site Museum, maintained by English Heritage, alongside numerous Roman period artifacts.

The statue underwent modification when its teeth were removed to transform it into a water fountain, indicating Roman repurposing practices.
