Equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington
Equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington, Bronze sculpture at Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, Scotland
The bronze equestrian statue depicts the Duke of Wellington mounted on his horse Copenhagen, created by Italian sculptor Carlo Marochetti in 1844.
The monument commemorates Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington, who led allied forces to victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
The statue gained international recognition when Glaswegians started placing traffic cones on the Duke's head, a tradition that continues since the 1980s.
Located outside the Gallery of Modern Art, the Category A listed monument stands at the intersection of Queen Street and Ingram Street.
Despite council attempts to prevent the traffic cone placement, the statue generates substantial merchandise revenue through postcards, keychains, and promotional materials.
