Clock Tower, Medieval town belfry in St Albans, England
The Clock Tower rises 64 feet high with five floors, becoming narrower at each level marked by external stone strings and a bell chamber.
Constructed between 1403 and 1412, the Clock Tower represented local merchants' opposition to St Albans Abbey's control over the town's time-keeping.
The tower contains two notable bells: Gabriel, marked with a divine inscription, and the Market bell that announced trading hours.
Visitors can climb 93 narrow steps to reach the top of the tower, which opens from Easter weekend through September on weekends.
Lord Grimthorpe, who designed Big Ben's mechanism, created the current clock system installed during the 1866 renovations.
