Carmarthen Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Carmarthen, Wales
The stone fortification stands on a high terrace above the River Towy, featuring remaining towers that flank the passage of its gatehouse structure.
Founded in 1106 by King Henry I, the castle served as the only royal center in West Wales throughout the 12th century, facing numerous attacks.
The castle structure reflects the Norman military architecture and administrative governance methods implemented during the Anglo-Norman conquest of Wales.
The Grade I listed building contains Castle House, which now functions as the Tourist Information Centre for visitors exploring the medieval remains.
Edmund Tudor, father of King Henry VII, died within the castle walls in 1456 while being held as a prisoner during the Wars of the Roses.
