Fitzwilliam Museum, Art and antiquities museum at University of Cambridge, England
The Fitzwilliam Museum contains more than 500,000 artifacts ranging from ancient Egyptian sarcophagi to contemporary artworks across multiple specialized galleries and exhibition spaces.
Established in 1816 through the legacy of Richard FitzWilliam, the museum moved to its current neoclassical building in 1842 after initially operating in the Perse School.
The museum holds masterpieces by Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt, along with the largest collection of 16th-century Elizabethan virginal manuscript music from notable composers.
The museum opens Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, with free admission and dedicated facilities for visitors with disabilities.
In 2006, museum experts successfully reconstructed three massive Qing Dynasty vases that shattered when a visitor accidentally knocked them from their display pedestals.
