St Bees Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse in St Bees Head, England
The stone lighthouse rises 17 meters on the red sandstone cliffs of St Bees Head, reaching 102 meters above sea level.
Built in 1822 after a fire destroyed the original coal-burning structure, the current tower replaced the last coal-powered lighthouse in Great Britain.
Trinity House maintains this maritime safety beacon, which guided vessels between Wales and the Solway Firth through generations of seafaring traditions.
The lighthouse sends two white flashes every 20 seconds and reaches 18 nautical miles across the waters with its 60,000 candela intensity.
Between World War I and II, pilots used this lighthouse as a turning point during air races between London and the Isle of Man.
