Thurn Castle, Castle ruin in Welsberg-Taisten, Italy
Thurn Castle stands on a wooded hill opposite Welsperg Castle, featuring remaining walls, a palas structure, and a tall medieval keep.
Built between 1126 and 1140, the castle changed ownership from the Füllein family to the Welsperg family in 1359, until a fire in 1765 left it abandoned.
The castle ruins represent the architectural preferences of South Tyrolean nobility, incorporating defensive elements common to medieval Alpine fortifications.
Visitors can reach the castle via bus line 441 from Val Casies to Monguelfo, followed by a 15-minute walk through marked hiking trails.
The castle complex maintains an unusually tall keep from the 12th century, distinguishing it from other fortifications in the Gsies Valley.
