Stompe toren, Spaarnwoude

The Stompe Toren stands 20 meters tall with thick medieval brick walls measuring 1.80 meters in width, supporting its structure on peaty ground.

After a lightning strike around 1450, the church was rebuilt as a stone cruciform structure and served as a navigation point for ships on the IJ.

The building now functions as a cultural center where exhibitions and concerts take place, adding new life to this medieval structure.

Visitors can access the tower during summer months on Sundays, while the surrounding cemetery contains both historical and contemporary graves.

Two stones embedded in the tower wall represent the fingertip-to-fingertip measurement of a legendary giant named Klaas van Kieten.
