Mariager Fjord

The Mariager Fjord extends 35 kilometers inland from the Kattegat sea, reaching depths of 30 meters with varying widths between 0.25 and 4.5 kilometers.

The town of Mariager developed around an important abbey established in 1430, which served as a regional pilgrimage center until its materials were later used for civil construction.

The town along the fjord maintains Danish traditions with its cobbled streets, sloped-roof houses, and numerous rose gardens scattered throughout residential areas.

Visitors can experience the fjord through weekend train rides operated by Mariager-Handest Veteranjernbane, covering 15 kilometers of track connecting multiple regional villages.

The fjord provides winter habitat for numerous bird species and received Ramsar Site designation in 1977, along with Randers Fjord and adjacent sea areas.
