Copenhagen Castle, Medieval castle ruin in central Copenhagen, Denmark
The remains of Copenhagen Castle stand on Slotsholmen islet, where the current Christiansborg Palace occupies the former castle grounds at the city center.
King Eric of Pomerania took control of the castle from the Bishop of Roskilde in 1417, transforming it into the primary residence of Danish monarchs.
The Blue Tower section of Copenhagen Castle served as both a defensive structure and a prison, representing the dual nature of medieval fortifications.
The castle site connects to multiple transportation networks, allowing visitors to reach the location from various points across Copenhagen via bus or metro.
The castle's weight caused such severe structural problems in the 1720s that King Frederik IV's complete reconstruction failed, leading to its demolition in 1731.
