Cheb Castle, Imperial castle ruins in Cheb, Czech Republic
The medieval fortress features a black defensive tower and a double chapel combining Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements above the Ohře River.
Frederick Barbarossa transformed the original Slavic structure into an imperial palace at the end of the 12th century, establishing it as a Staufen residence.
The castle chapel, dedicated to St. Martin, St. Erhard, and St. Ursula, stands on the foundations of an ancient Slavic burial ground.
The castle remains open to visitors throughout the year, with guided tours available during regular hours and special events organized on weekends.
The castle represents the only preserved Staufen imperial palace in the Czech Republic, with its multi-story chapel displaying original architectural features.
