Xochimilco Ecological Park and Plant Market

Xochimilco Ecological Park and Plant Market is a nature reserve with lakes, canals, and artificial islands planted with ahuejote, pine, and eucalyptus trees spread across its grounds. It hosts around 1,700 vendor stalls selling live plants and gardening supplies, forming one of the region's largest marketplaces for such goods.

The place was established in 1993 on the site of former chinampas, which were artificial islands built during pre-Hispanic times to grow food in shallow waters. This ancient farming method still shapes how the landscape is organized today.

The name comes from the Nahuatl word for flower, and the place holds significance as a space where locals and visitors connect with gardening and traditional waterways. The flat-bottomed boats that navigate the canals reflect centuries of local practices adapted to the water environment.

The place is easy to reach and offers wide paths for exploring on foot or by bike, with dedicated walking and cycling areas throughout. Visitors should prepare for outdoor conditions and note that market activity is strongest in the early hours of the day.

The space is divided into four distinct zones including a bird sanctuary and botanical garden, each worth exploring separately. This layout lets visitors experience different facets of nature and gardening culture all in one location.
