Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Suspension bridge in Washington state

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was a suspension bridge that opened to traffic on July 1, 1940.

It famously collapsed into Puget Sound on November 7 of the same year due to aeroelastic flutter.

Its collapse had a lasting impact on science and engineering, changing how bridges were designed forever.

Before its collapse, it served as a vital link between the city of Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula.

The bridge's dramatic failure led to it being nicknamed 'Galloping Gertie'.
