Federated States of Micronesia
Federated States of Micronesia, Island country in western Pacific Ocean, Micronesia.
The Federation comprises 607 islands spread across four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, covering 702 square kilometers of land area north of the equator.
The region transformed from a United Nations Trust Territory administered by the United States in 1947 to an independent nation through the Compact of Free Association in 1986.
The ancient settlement of Nan Madol on Pohnpei features interconnected artificial islands and stone structures that served as ceremonial center for the Saudeleur dynasty.
The nation uses United States dollar as currency and maintains free association agreement that allows its citizens unrestricted travel and work opportunities in American territories.
The federation contains over 2,000 small coral formations across western Pacific waters, with many untouched marine environments and traditional navigation practices still in use.
