The Riau-Lingga Sultanate was a significant maritime kingdom in the early 19th century.
Established in 1819, it was a successor state to the powerful Johor Sultanate.
Riau-Lingga had a rich Malay culture influenced by Islam and local traditions.
Although no longer existent, the sultanate's influence can be seen in local customs and heritage sites.
The Sultanate was dissolved in 1911, marking the end of local monarchies under Dutch colonial rule.
