Mariä-Himmelfahrt-Kirche

The Mariä-Himmelfahrt-Kirche is a Gothic parish church in Melk with three naves supported by pillars and connected by network-ribbed vaults. The interior features intricate stone decorations and carvings throughout, creating a detailed and layered visual experience.

The building suffered a major fire in 1847 and was extensively reconstructed between 1868 and 1877. During this rebuilding, it received a new three-part tower that rises approximately 55 meters in height.

The church interior displays numerous carved figures and reliefs showing scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary. These religious artworks reflect the devotion that has been part of the community across generations.

The church is normally open during the day for visits and offers a quiet space to look around at your own pace. Keep in mind that access may be limited during religious services or special events.

A small chapel on the southern side was built in 1684 to express gratitude for protection during threats from the Ottoman forces. This side chapel shows how local communities transformed their fears and hopes into stone and prayer.
