The Peraugymnasium is a lower and upper secondary school in Villach's centre, with about 1200 pupils and 110 teachers. Architect Josef Horky's building was begun in 1869 and its west wing finished in 1872; the south wing, completed in 1984/85, encloses a courtyard. A black glass cube added there in 2008/09 holds six classrooms and a common room.

Architect Josef Horky's plans were realised from 1869, and the west wing was finished in 1872, though teaching had already begun in a makeshift classroom in an inn. The school was boys-only until 1909; the east wing served as a primary and special school until 1961, when it became a girls' gymnasium. A 1982 renovation triggered a fire that damaged parts of the building, and the south wing was completed in 1984/85.

The school's name comes from the Peraustraße, leading to the Perau district, a former village on the Drau; the name may derive from the Slovene perav(a), "rotten", for a wood of decaying trees, first recorded as Perowe in 1212. Each year the Matura ball is held since 2015 at the Casineum Velden together with BG/BRG Villach St. Martin, and the Matura celebration takes place at the Finkenstein castle ruin.

The school organizes enrollment procedures for new students through scheduled appointments with administration. Additional guidance services are available to help students with questions about their education and future.

The school's name comes from Peraustraße, the street leading to the Perau district; a 1212 document records the name as Perowe, possibly from the Slovene perav(a), meaning rotten wood. Its partners include the Liceo Grigoletti in Pordenone since 1991 and the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium in Bamberg since 2018.
