Boloto Mokh

Boloto Mokh is a protected swamp in the northern part of Vitebsk Region, featuring interconnected water bodies and marsh vegetation spread across the landscape. The site sits at about 135 meters elevation and contains different wetland types with varying plant communities.

This swamp formed after the last ice age and has kept its natural features across thousands of years. The region developed over centuries while the wetland itself remained unchanged, making it a rare example of geological stability.

Local people have long depended on the swamp for traditional activities, especially gathering plants during warmer months, showing how people and the landscape are interconnected here.

Access to certain areas requires special permits obtained in advance. Guided tours are required during the breeding season from April through June, and visitors should bring appropriate clothing and footwear for wet terrain.

The swamp maintains constant water levels throughout the year because of its special geological formation. These steady conditions provide a reliable home for about 20 rare plant species that are hard to find elsewhere.
