Welland Canal, Maritime transportation system in Ontario, Canada
The Welland Canal extends 43.4 kilometers through eight locks, enabling ships to navigate between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie through the Niagara Peninsula.
The first version of this canal opened in 1829 with forty wooden locks, undergoing three additional reconstructions until the current fourth version was completed in 1932.
The St. Catharines Museum at Lock 3 presents exhibits about local history, including displays of the Four Welland Canals and the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
The canal system operates from March through December, moving approximately 40 million tonnes of cargo annually between the Great Lakes and international ports.
The engineering system lifts vessels 99.5 meters over the Niagara Escarpment through a series of locks using only gravity and water movement.
