SS Edmund Fitzgerald, Shipwreck in Lake Superior
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975.
This massive ship, launched in 1958, still remains the largest to have sunk in Lake Superior.
The tragic sinking of the ship is famously memorialized in Gordon Lightfoot's hit song 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald'.
Its wreckage lies at a depth of 530 feet approximately 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay near the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie.
There were no survivors from its 29 crew members, and the exact cause of the sinking remains unknown.
