Schenkenberg castle ruin

The stone remains of Schenkenberg Castle stand at 631 meters elevation, overlooking the Schenkenberg valley in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland.

Built in 1243 by the Habsburg dynasty, the castle served as an administrative center for 260 years before its gradual decline in the 18th century.

The ruins maintain recognition as a Class A Swiss cultural property, reflecting the architectural and defensive methods of medieval Swiss fortifications.

Visitors reach the archaeological site through marked hiking trails from Thalheim, with the ruins located at coordinates 47.441916, 8.100706.

Local farmers once used the abandoned castle as a stone quarry until 1918 when the Historical Preservation Society of Aargau purchased it for preservation.
