Former Cistercian monastery Wettingen
Former Cistercian monastery Wettingen, Medieval Cistercian monastery in Wettingen, Switzerland
The monastery incorporates a church, cloisters, and multiple buildings constructed using regional limestone and sandstone materials spanning several architectural periods.
Founded in 1227 by Count Heinrich II of Rapperswil following his survival from a shipwreck, the monastery remained active until its dissolution in 1841.
The monastery maintains Switzerland's largest collection of historic stained glass panels within its cloister walls, dating from various construction periods.
Located at Klosterstrasse 11 in Wettingen, the former monastery now houses a cantonal school while maintaining regular Catholic services in its church.
The complex features a Renaissance-era painted ceiling depicting the Infant Jesus, which survived a devastating fire in 1507 without any damage.
