Site of Shanxi Third Middle School, former school in Datong

Welcome to the Shanxi Provincial Third High School Site, located in Shilidian Village, Majunying Township, Nanjiao District, Datong City, Shanxi Province, China. This site was listed as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 2006. The Shanxi Provincial Third High School Site was built in 1918 and completed in 1921, blending Chinese and Western architectural styles. From the summer of 1921 to the summer of 1937, from the summer of 1949 to 1972, it was the campus of Shanxi Provincial Third High School (later renamed Shanxi Provincial Datong High School, Chahar Province Datong High School, Chahar Province Datong First High School, and Shanxi Provincial Datong First High School). In March 1972, due to the exchange of school names between Datong No. 1 Middle School and Datong Normal School, it became the campus of Datong Normal School (now Shanxi Datong University Datong Normal Branch), which is still in use today. Shanxi Provincial Third High School was founded in the 31st year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1905), initially named "Datong Prefecture Middle School", and the school building was located in the city of Datong. In the third year of Xuantong (1911), the Xinhai Revolution broke out, and the revolutionary army occupied the school building of Datong Prefecture Middle School, forcing the school to close. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the school resumed classes and changed its name to "Da Shuo Middle School". In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), the Shanxi Provincial Government took over Da Shuo Middle School and changed its name to Shanxi Provincial Third High School. In the sixth year of the Republic of China (1917), Yuan Youmei took over as the principal and applied to the provincial government for a new school building. The following year, Yan Xishan's provincial government allocated more than 500 silver dollars for land purchase and more than 80,000 silver dollars for construction. The school was located on the banks of the Ten Mile River in the west of Datong City, purchased 500 acres of land, and began construction of the new campus, which is now known as the "Shanxi Provincial Third High School Site". Visitors to the Shanxi Provincial Third High School Site can explore the rich history and cultural heritage of this important educational institution. The site offers a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, reflecting the influence of both cultures on the development of education in Shanxi Province. Visitors can also learn about the various changes that have taken place at the school over the years, from its founding in the early 20th century to its current use as a branch of Shanxi Datong University. The Shanxi Provincial Third High School Site is open to visitors throughout the year, and guided tours are available in both English and Mandarin. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the site, including the Ten Mile River and the surrounding hills. Whether you are a student of history, architecture, or culture, the Shanxi Provincial Third High School Site is a must-see destination for anyone interested in exploring the rich heritage of Shanxi Province.
