St. Trudpert's Abbey

The abbey consists of a three-aisled basilica with a westwork structure, featuring red terra cotta roof tiles and Baroque architectural elements throughout the complex.

Founded in the 7th century by Irish missionary Saint Trudpert, the monastery experienced multiple destructions, including attacks during the German Peasants' War in 1525 and the Thirty Years' War.

The monastery houses two preserved 13th-century crosses with niello work and contains the manuscript of St. Trudperter Hohelied, an early German mystical text.

The Sisters of St. Joseph currently operate the abbey premises, maintaining both religious facilities and medical services for visitors and the local community.

The abbey developed its wealth through silver mining operations in the region, controlling estates across Münstertal, Breisgau, Ortenau, and Alsace during medieval times.
