Picpus Cemetery, Private cemetery in 12th arrondissement, France
Two hectares of burial grounds contain individual graves and mass tombs arranged within landscaped gardens surrounded by high stone walls.
The cemetery originated in 1794 when authorities requisitioned land from an Augustinian convent to bury 1,306 victims of the guillotine.
French aristocratic families maintain their right to be interred in this cemetery, reserved exclusively for descendants of the Revolution victims.
The cemetery welcomes visitors at 35 rue de Picpus from Monday through Saturday between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM except during August.
General Lafayette rests beneath an American flag in this cemetery, making it the only location in Paris with a permanent United States flag.
