Foigny Abbey, Cistercian monastery in La Bouteille, France
The monastery extends across a valley in Thiérache, featuring traditional religious architecture and surrounding agricultural lands covering 12,000 hectares.
Bernard of Clairvaux and Bishop Barthélemy of Jur established Foigny Abbey on July 11, 1121, following the architectural design of Clairvaux Abbey.
The monastery maintained a community of 100 monks and 200 lay brothers who developed agricultural practices and established new settlements in the region.
The site contains a 12th-century mill that operated until 2000 and now generates hydroelectric power from the River Thon.
Archaeological excavations in 1959 confirmed the exact replication of Clairvaux Abbey's church floor plan in Foigny's construction.
