Palazzo Vecchio, Historic palace in Florence, Italy

The Palazzo Vecchio is a massive, Romanesque, crenellated fortress-palace located in Piazza della Signoria.

Built in 1299 as the seat of the Florentine government, it has been the town hall of Florence for centuries.

It houses the office of the mayor of Florence and it is the headquarters of the Florence city council.

Today, it also hosts a museum which explores the building's history and importance to daily life over the centuries.

The Salone dei Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred) is the largest room in Italy that can be used as a political meeting place.
