Vicopisano, Italian comune
Vicopisano is a comune in the Province of Pisa in the Italian region of Tuscany, situated about 50 kilometers west of Florence and roughly 15 kilometers east of Pisa. It is situated in the Arno Valley and is encircled by Monte Pisano from the North. History Throughout the Medieval times, Vicopisano held itself as the prosperous and well-fortified centre of the then Republic of Pisa. In 1406, Florence conquered Vicopisano and it was then when a castle, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, was constructed. Geography Vicopisano shares borders with the following municipalities: Bientina, Buti, Calci, Calcinaia, Cascina and San Giuliano Terme. It also has associated hamlets such as Caprona, Cucigliana, Lugnano, Noce, San Giovanni alla Vena and Uliveto Terme. Demographics Economy Economic activities include the ceramics production, mechanics and bottling of mineral water. Moreover, peasants in Vicopisano make their living off olive oil and cereal cultivation. Main Sights Tourist attractions in Vicopisano include Brunelleschi Rocca (a castle with an annexed Romanesque church of the 12th century), 12 Medieval Towers, the Pieve di Santa Maria (house to 13th-Century Frescoes), the Pieve di San Jacopo, the Palazzo Pretorio, the historical Villa Fehr and the Palazzo della Vecchia Posta.
